SQL Server Instances

Can you please explain in Laymans term the definition of SQL Server instances?
Bec someone from our non-technical dept is requeting to create s SQL Server Instance in 2000.

in simple words: on a given server you can install and run multiple SQL Server services, that have their own ports, logins, and databases, while each of these services is called an 'instance' ... for more information i would suggest to ask a more specific question in the SQL Server forum here ...
