I am in desparate need of some advice! I work at a company that produces cast letters and am working on a project where we can distribute (for free) the fonts that are specific to our products (i.e. our "house" fonts) in order for our customers to better layout their messages.

My problem is my boss wants the ENTIRE catalog of fonts we use; which include:
  • Clarendon Med
  • Clarendon Med. Outline
  • Microgramma BE
  • Helvetica BE
  • Helvetica Med
  • Helvetica Reg
  • Helvetica Bold
  • Friz Quadrata
  • Optima
  • Palatino
  • Times Roman
  • Times Bold
  • Optima Semi Bold
  • Garamond

Am I entirely off base here...but isn't that illegal? We can't distribute for free something that is otherwise available for sale right?

If you had to buy the fonts, then you shouldn't be allowed to distribute them.

Well we didn't technically "buy" the list I included. What I mean is, they came with the software we use like Times Roman comes with Microsoft Word.

No it's intellectual property owned by Monotype Coropration. You need to license here and they send you a qoute. Speaking from experience its cheaper to pay the license fee than to use end user fonts illegally, NBC got nailed for it and so did I..only I just developed an iphone app :(
