How do the user categories on this site work?

I've been trying to understand user categories on this site ('Newbie', 'Moderator', etc).
Can someone please educate my on how these work?
When for instance do I stop being 'Newbie'.
And again, I thought it unflattering to address a respectable well-meaning forum contributor as 'Site addict'. Oooops, my wife would kill me if she saw such a tag against my name!
Anyhow, seriously someone should help me understand. How do people become 'Expert', 'Moderator', etc
I de wait patiently.
Ifedi.
