My first thought was white paint to make it "lighter" but as you said what would you put IN a barrel, then My guess would be helium.

A lamp? Upsidasium ?

I was thinking helium too, but when I really thought about it, a full helium tank is heaver than an empty one. So I guess you'd need to preface it with what was is already in the barrel and is it sealed? A helium tank(barrel) I guess would be lighter than a air tank but I really don't know, because you'd also have to qualify it with the pressure of each. If they were filled to the same pressure, I'd think you'd need a lot more helium because of it's small size, compared with relatively larger atoms that make up your standard air mix, but then again you said put it and didn't mention taking out. Putting helium in without removing anything would only make it heavier. I guess it all boils down to a question of density, so I guess I'll stick with my original answer, A lamp.

Me thinks a hole would make it lighter if the barrel was full

well if u take the barrel as it is, whether somethins already in it or not, puttin a hole in the barrel would lighten it...either that or suck out all the air and make a vacuum...or fill it with wood, paper, flammable liquids, then light a match and throw it in, that would really light it up!

but in all seriousness i agree a hole is the answer

i would say put termites in there so it would make tunnels in it and make it lighter

holes. the barrel itself would become lighter and some substance would come out. The barrel would become lighter. I thought of termites but realized that would make the whole barrel disappear instead of becoming lighter.

Putting a hole in something does not necessarily mean picking a hole up and placing it inside. It can mean poking a hole in the barrel.
