How does a zoom in/out function works in a VB GUI?

I am building a GUI with pure VB and I am stuck with the functionality of the zoom in/out option, because it takes too long to resize the objects. Specially when the start up canvas will become huge in order to show the required level of detail for the focusing point.

Is there any trick in handling this functionality...
