Basic PC help

Hi Everyone,

This is a really basic query, so I really do hope that there is simple affirmative answer.

I have a friend , honest-it wasn't me, who has locked themselves out of their computer because they gave it a password and have now forgotten what it was. They just don't use it much, so they forgot what it was.

Is there any easy way around this, say through resetting the systems administrator. The sytems is XP and running windows - hope that helps.

I'm not that technically proficient as you can probably tell. Your help would be greatly appreciated. MANY THANKS.

David.

Hi David,

Im no expert either but I did the same thing recently.

Start your PC and as its loading press F8.

Select SAFE MODE - This will load XP but it will look different and limits what you can do in it.

Using the START menu remove your password, the same way you would in normal mode.

Reboot and you should get straight in. You can always add a password later.

Hi Truly

Sorry for the delay in replying, but I have only just got round to testing your theory on my friends PC, unfortunaltey I couldn't get it to work.

The problem is that the macjine is quite simply security locked. Apart from your earlier suggestion which I tried do you know of anything else that we might try? Many thanks. David.

This question has been asked many times in out Windows Forum. I don't think that there is an easy answer (beyond reinstalling XP). Try searching there and/or posting this question there. If it were easy to break into a password protected computer, everybody would be doing it.
