How to set date/time on a Samsung MP3 player?

8,435 Expert 8TB
Hi all.

I have a 1GB Samsung MP3 player which is also a voice recorder and flash disk. Pretty standard stuff these days, I know. But what I want to know is, how can I set the date and time on it?

Copying sound files to it from the PC, they take along their date/time along you're expect. But if I use the voice recorder, the sound files it creates have some ridiculous "zero" date - at a guess, it might have been 01/01/1980 or something. If the silly thing has a calendar/clock, I need to set it so that I can tell when things were actually recorded. I have tried the manual, and scanning for anything I could find on the web, including the manufacturer's website, but cannot find an answer.

(Yes, I know I could do something like saying the date and time at the start of the recording - not an option for practical reasons)

Sorry about the lack of specifics, but I just realised this might be somewhere I could finally get an answer. I'm at work, will have to get the model number, etc. when I get home.

Now if it where 01/01/1970 then I would say that it is just writing 0 to the time field in the filing system because this is the index date (i.e. what is treated as 0) for a common date format.

This might suggest that there is no on board clock, it is just writing a fixed value (probably 0).

You could be right - I forgot to dig it out and check when I got home last night.

As for there being no onboard clock, I'm not too sure. Though I haven't actually used the voice recorder for a few months, I think I remember the time incrementing for each one. In other words, the clock appeared to be running, just hadn't been set.

However, even I wouldn't be willing to take my word for that - I really need to check.

I'll e-mail myself a reminder to check up on it this weekend (back at work now, it's Friday morning and looks like being a long day.)

There might be an on board clock, i.e. the unit can tick off seconds (in fact there must be as the processor will require a clock input of xMHz or whatever) but no on board Real Time Clock (i.e. recording the time in yyy/mm/dd hh:mm:ss )

Yeah, that's the way it seems. What a pain!

I found a manual for the YP-T7F at
http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/co...8/EN/main.html
Had to read a bit of German or something to get there. And the site keeps trying to install Korean on my stystem. But your answer could be around there somewhere. Hope this is of use to you,

Thanks, I'll check it out.

However, I do have the manual, and also found a copy of it online somewhere (Samsung's website, most likely).

In case anyone's interested, I'm looking into this again. Have found some possibly helpful links in Google, but they're mostly blocked by work system. For example, GoodGearGuide is blocked as a "shopping site". Argh.

Will have to check from home.

Well, I've spent quite some time browsing all over the place, and I'm convinced that the Samsung YP-U1 is a good buy. Which hardly matters, since I've already bought it.

As for setting the clock, I have yet to find anything, anywhere, to hint that it even has such a device. What a pain!

Time to give up on it, I think.

Alternitively crack it open, buy a real time clock chip, crowbar it onto the circuit board and rewrite the firmnware :D

for your custom sounds, right click, go into properties
in the summary tab (u might have to click the advance button too)

the field that says year, change it. then upload to your mp3.

how does that work for u?

You lost me there. Properties of what?

If I copy files to the thing, they appear to keep their date/time stamps intact, it just doesn't know what the current date/time is.

Also, note that the only reason the current date/time is desirable is when using it as a voice recorder. It produces WAV files, with some ridiculous date in 1970 or something. Makes things difficult when you go to copy them a few days later and have to try an dremember what was recorded when. Not a major issue, of course, but annoying.
