Machinist Tool question

Trying to identify a tool that I believe may have been used by a machinist ... there is a set made by Craftsman ... they are steel and in the form of a T ... at the base of the T, there is a screw cap that regulates a bar which in turn controls tension on a spring. One side of the top of the T compresses against the spring (spring loaded) and slide into the other half of the upper T bar.

What is it called and what is its function?

Thank you for your assistance.
