not able to change root password (ubuntu server)

194 100+
Hi everyeone,

I have insalled ubuntu server. Somebody gave me root access. I check its id and it showed me id as 0 and groupid as 0. I also checked it using whoami = root.

But when i tried to change the root password using passwd command its giving me the following response:
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. The program 'passwd' is currently not installed.  You can install it by typing:
  2. apt-get install passwd
  3.
But when i tried this command:
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. linuxsysp
  2.
It worked and i can change password using this command. I never saw this command anywhere even on google also there is no man entry found.

Please tell me what exactly going on here.

Thanking you.

Are you sure the root password has changed? Can you log in as another account and then run /bin/su - and still login to the root account?

This may have checked in the last few months, however Ubuntu has always had the theory that the root user did not use a password - you would have a single privileged account that would run 'sudo' commands - that allow you to run a single command as root.

I'm not familiar with the linuxsysp command, I'm unable to find the package as well, and that searching Debian's repositories.
