A process writing to a directory...its filling the "." for the dir and hosing dsk

I have data collecting to a disk labeled vg01 with a directory labeled /data. I cant get aything to write to it because some process is writing to it and filling up the "." part of the directory. There should be nothing under "." or ".." of a file.
ls -la shows 174806 for .
1064 for ..
96 for .lnf
Then nothing for the actual directory because something is writing to "."

Hi Kurt and welcome to bytes.com!

Well, to find out what process is writing to there, run
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. lsof | grep /data
Then you can kill whatever is stopping you from writing to there - assuming, your reason for it not working is correct of course.

I should have specified...I use HPUX so the ls option of "of" isnt available. I agree with your theory of finding the process that writes to "." and killing...I just cant find out how to locate it. Read thru the man pages for ls and doesnt help.

OK, well there is a port of lsof for HP-UX, which you can download under http://hpux.connect.org.uk/hppd/cgi-...&Search=Search - that should do the job. If no version is available for your system, you can download the source and compile it yourself.

There might also be some native tool, that can do the same job, but if so I haven't found it yet.
