can't install/get wireless card on ubuntu10.04 working. rt2860

SOLVED

Using Ubuntu 10.04
RT2860 but the folder is
"2009_0521_RT2860_Linux_STA_V2.1.2.0/"
and home folder is
jyzrxal

I need instructions that explicitly using MY home folder name, spells out what I'm suppose to do.

I SO want to have a wireless wifi card that works on a desktop. I do have ethernet wifi card underhood too. I need the wireless card to work at coffee shops and on vacation without having to go to hell and high water to get it working. Unfortunately someone dropped the ball there because thats not how it works. And they want Ubuntu to be mainstream? I laugh! ><-( I get numerous errors. One of them is no matter how I type it in, it seems to indicate that I'm not in the right folder. I thought I had fixed that, but still get errors.
jyzrxal IS the home directory.

And I'm not supposed to have to configure anything! But, Makefile is not found. :P
I'm using rt2860 I found out. NOT the Azio awd102n that is says on the CD! Who is a newbie suppose to know that that?!? I get the following errors and am beyond frustrated. NO

Here is the ORIGINAL using the first set of instructions. That I REDID bec someone said I was doing it all wrong! output code:

[Went to linux forum for help but couldn't post code bec stupid forum insisted I was posting URLs WITH CODE TAGS! :P I told them to delete my account as they can't help me anyways and I was through. And, person who came here and posted there thought I was NOT using Code tags! IDIOTs! ]

I even tried it using the 2009 data, as the newest download used 2009.

NO matter WHAT I use, I get this result! So I used another how-to. Same result, then went back to linux forum's posters instructions and got the same result I knew I'd get because I had already did this. And was told I was doing it all wrong and should use code tags. I was, I just can't post results with URL IN CODE TAGS in that forum. :P

Your best bet then is to use wicd.
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. wicd-client
  2.
to run it.

for more information.

PS. What I meant was:
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. sudo -i
  2. ifconfig wlan0 up
  3. iwconfig wlan0 essid NETWORK_NAME
  4. dhcpcd wlan0
  5.
btw this also works:
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
  2. sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid NETWORK_NAME
  3. sudo dhcpcd wlan0

Also it says that I have no wireless extensions!

That last thing (iwconfig output) means it's working.

You should be able to connect to wireless networks using whatever wireless network manager ubuntu has (wicd i think)

From the command line you can look for access points by doing

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. iwlist wlan0 scan
  2.
connect to any open access point by doing

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. ifconfig wlan0 up
  2. iwconfig wlan0 essid NETWORK_NAME
  3. dhcpcd wlan0
  4.
secured access points are more complicated with the command line. Better to use something like wicd.

Okay to hook up wirelessly at home, that is too difficult. It finds the network, but nothing else works. I get a permission denied. And when I try to add the network, and put in the password, its doesn't allow me to apply. HOwever, IF I can get the above working at coffee shop, and just use ethernet at home, then I am happy!

I've copied it down, so that I can go to coffee shop and try it.

Thanks!
Jul 7 '10 #4
oh do sudo -i before those commands to avoid getting permission denied.

So, the correct code, now that I'm not at coffee shop and at parents is... ?
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. # sudo -i ifconfig wlan0 up
  2. # sudo -i iwconfig wlan0 essid NETWORK_NAME
  3. # sudo -i dhcpcd wlan0
  4.
However, coffee shop NOW requires a password.
And, of course i got the permission denied, but I forgot to put in the -i bit. :P And, because Sister needed her car and I had no time to redo it again, I packed up and left, so I could continue at Parents house. dbrothers is their network name.

However, at parents, running the wlan0 scan, nets me no scan results. Of course, they have mac airport set up.

So, question #1):
Assuming I put in the
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. sudo -i
correctly, would it pop up in terminal a place to put in the Dunn brothers password for internet? Can you give me an output that I should see? Thanks!

(I'm going to try again tomorrow morning, when I'll have more time.)

Question #2:
What should I be doing to get connected to a secured network? Most coffee shops are going secured these days.

Thanks!
Jul 7 '10 #6
@tpgames
I meant:
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. sudo -i
  2. ifconfig wlan0 up
  3. iwconfig wlan0 essid NETWORK_NAME
  4. dhcpcd wlan0
  5.
by the way, this also works:
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. ifconfig wlan0 up
  2. iwconfig wlan0 essid NETWORK_NAME
  3. dhcpcd wlan0
  4.
Unfortunately, this doesn't work on secured networks and the setup there depends on the type of security etc.

Your best bet is to use a gui. I think ubuntu should have wicd to run it, just enter
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. wicd-client
  2.
that should bring up the manager and everything is self-explanatory from there.
http://wicd.sourceforge.net/download.php for more info.

@trutheality
It says that dhcpcd is not installed.
and when I use sudo apt-get install, that doesn't work.
I"m at coffee shop now with dad's Mac and my ubuntu.

could not resolve us.archive.ubuntu.com because I'm offline on ubuntu.

And, so dhcpcd wlan0 won't work, It keeps saying install what I can't isntall. :P

IS there a way to install it through USB cord from Mac to Ubuntu? Never mind! My dad has the wrong cords for that.

UPDATE again: Dad is running a memory stick to coffee shop so I can transfer the file to my ubuntu and hopefully install it. I"m hoping that double clicking on it will auto install it.

Question: Should I put the dhcpcd deb file in a specific folder before I try to install it? And, once I get it there, is there any other commands I should know? Assume complete idiotic newbie here. Thanks!

Success! And without using wicd. However, I will take a look at wicd if I need to at home to use wireless there.
thanks!

This thread is now solved. :D
