Debian shutdown and startup hang

Hello everyone

I was wondering if someone can assist me. I just installed a fresh copy of debian etch on a server that was previously running windows. Startup time of the server is roughly an hour. Which is unacceptable for a production server. The server hangs on "Uniform cd-rom driver revision:3.20". If I remove the cd-rom drive, the server willl still hang but on another device it is trying to load.

While trying to shutdown the server there is also a long delay before the server will actually shutdown or restart. The server will hang on "asking all remaining processes to terminate".

People have told me the Harddrive may be faulty, but I had windows running fine on it earlier.
Does anyone have any ideas on what is causing this problem and how I can fix it?

Have you tried putting a Live CD in there and checking things out? Something like Knoppix or an Ubuntu Live CD? Then you can check the drive and devices, etc...
