connectivity issue

153 100+
Hello,

Ok, so i have Win XP pro on one machine and RHEL 4 on another. A router connects the two machines and to the internet as well.

Linux has a static IP 192.168.1.100 and it can connect to the internet just fine. XP has dynamic address within the range 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.10 managed by the router and also connects to the internet just fine. The router is 192.168.1.1.

From either machine i can ping the other using IP addresses but i cannot ping either by host names. I am assuming this is a lack of name/IP registration somehow but the curious thing is that i just did a rebuild of the Linux machine (last time it was Dynamic IP not static) but I could ping by host name and use SAMBA. I didnt have to do any specific name registering last time to get it work. Now i cannot do either (that is get samba to work or ping by hostname). From the windows machine the samba share name appears in the network but it says cannot find it, you may not have permission.

I have gone through the linux box and I beleive i have the host name set up correctly ( at least it is in the /etc/hosts file and the host.conf).

Can someone point me in a direction of something to try here?
