visibility of exported variables in makefile

Hello everyone!

I'm having a problem building an image from an opensource code. I'm trying to build the image with the Makefile that came with the source code .
There is a Script called by the Makefile which happens not to see the variables defined and exported in the Makefile.
Does anybody know why this happens?

Temporally I have added the definitions of the variables at the beginning of the file and I have achieved to build an image, but its size is not even close to the original firmware's size.

If anybody would help me, i would be greatful.
