Software Problem

Please tell me the way of installing/uninstalling softwares on Linux Operating System.

Now I'm using "Fedora Core 6" on a P3 IBM Computer including 40GB Hard Drive, 256MB Ram, 575MHz processer & CD Writer.

please help me my friends.

There are usually two ways of installing software: either directly from the source code or by means of precompiled binaries. For a beginner, the second option may be more convenient.

Typically, binaries are distributed in RPMs. Look for an RPM of the desired software and download it. You can use the command 'rpm' to install it, see option '-i' in the man page.

Note: you have to be root on your machine in order to install to the default directories.

If you compiled the program from source (i.e. using the make utility) you will need to do a make uninstall (if it exists), or hunt down the installation directory and delete the files yourself.
The two common package managers for Fedora are yum and rpm (which are actually similar technologies). If you used one of those you can either yum remove <package name> or rpm -e <package name>.
