I am sure you have all heard this same question many times but I haven't been able to find any posts on it. But I was wondering how to connect to the linternet using a live CD of Knoppix. Is this even possible and if it isn't can you please help me to connect to the internet with any Linux OS.

Any help is much appreciated.

As far as I know, live CD distributions such as Knoppix, auto detect your hardware configuration and then use DHCP to automatically obtain an IP for your computer. It should then be a simple matter of opening up a web browser.

If you're not auto connecting, then perhaps either you don't have a card that's supported by default. That, or your router isn't running in DHCP mode and you will have to specify an IP. We would need to know more about your network setup in general.

My network setup uses a Linksys card to connect to the internet. As for the DHCP mode, I don't know but I'll check into it.

Run the command /sbin/ifconfig

With any luck, there should be at least 2 rows. We're not interested in the "lo" row. There should be a row titled "eth0" or "ath0", or something to that effect. We're also interested in the second line; inet addr:xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Can you post the output of running /sbin/ifconfig here.

Also, if you have a router, connect to the admin interface and check the routing tables to see how many IPs it has automatically allocated. If you're not sure if you're using static or dhcp, then you're almosty likely using dhcp on your router. It's just a matter of firstly, knowing if your card is supported by linux and second, enabling dhcp (which I think is on by default with knoppix).

Alright I found the problem. Mainly right now to fix it would cost some good money which I don't really have. Now I have only one question. Could you take a DSL phone line and hook it directly up to your computer and skip the modem, cause if you can't I will need about 30 or 40 dollars and I just don't have it right now.
