App to broadcast a video stream

1 New Member
Hello,

I was wondering if there exist a application on linux or android to broadcast a video stream. I want to stream a .mkv file over the home network to different clients. So it acts like live tv.

The reason is when we go on holiday with the van the kids can watch the same video, the video can then be started on the front seat and picked up by android tablets through wifi.

Is something possible, I googled around but didn't find a decent result. Seems VLC can do it, but it's not so easy.

Yes, it is possible to broadcast a video stream over a home network to different clients using various applications available on Linux and Android. One popular option is to use VLC media player, which is a versatile multimedia player available for both Linux and Android.

Here's how you can achieve this using VLC:
  • Install VLC: If you don't have VLC installed already, you can install it on both your Linux computer and Android devices. You can find VLC in the software repositories of most Linux distributions, and it is available on the Google Play Store for Android.
  • Set up the server: On your Linux computer, open VLC and go to "Media" -> "Stream" option. Select the video file (.mkv) you want to stream and click on the "Stream" button. In the "Destinatio n" section, choose the streaming method, such as HTTP or RTP, and configure the desired options. Click on the "Stream" button to start the server.
  • Connect the clients: On your Android tablets, open VLC and go to "Stream" option. Enter the network address of the Linux computer running the VLC server. This can be the IP address of the Linux computer on the local network. For example, if the Linux computer has the IP address 192.168.1.100, you would enter "http://192.168.1.100" as the network address.
  • Start playback: Once you've entered the network address, VLC on the Android tablets should be able to connect to the server and start playing the video stream. You can control playback, pause, or stop the video as needed.

Please note that the specific steps may vary slightly depending on the versions of VLC and the operating systems you are using. However, the general concept of streaming using VLC should remain the same.

Hi Does anyone know how I can grab a video stream from an IP-address? There's a video web server for live image transmission in the Internet. Data transfer is accomplished via TCP/IP. The web cam that I am using is integrated into a network with fixed IP address. The streaming software is already there, so I have to go to this IP-address to see the live video stream. How can I grab this video stream from an IP-address with an application...

I'm working with a sql db field that stores audio and video as a varbinary(max) field. I'm able to retrieve this from the db as a byte, but I'm struggling to figure out how to convert it back to an audio or video object that I can embed or link to in my website. I'm able to determine if the object is a audio or video from another field that is prefixed withe either "au_" or "vi_". Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
