Can I have a usable search box in my website?
yes.

then how do I do it?
that depends on what and where you want to search.

for a start: you can check for Google Site Search - which you can implement as a search for your own website if u want to. otherwise as Dormilich said - if u have specific requirements it could be that another solution would be preferable.
