Tools to develop a project (Original Post In Access/VBA)

P: 2
Hi folks,

i'm having a big problem trying to project something.

I work in a big company that has many issues on IT permissions. So, my boss asked me to develop a database and a user interface to make easier to keep a history of ours projects.

When i received that demand, i though that it would be a easy task. But.. as soon as i start working, the tools are not clear. First of all, i cannot use any server of the company because IT group don't permit to develop database on their servers. The problem to ask the IT to develop is that my boss would have to pay for the IT group of the same company and it's very expensive, so the boss of my boss did not permit that solution.

So i though about access. But there is another problem.. The company is migrating to windows 7 and they do not install any access viewer on windows 7 here. And we don't have permission to install software by ourselves.

So, does someone have any idea? i thought about use a site with java script or something and use a batch file to run the index page and access database. I'm not sure if this is possible. The files will be on a company server shared with the co-workers.

I "feel" for you!

In your Post:
  • First of all, i cannot use any server of the company because IT group don't permit to develop database
  • The problem to ask the IT to develop is that my boss would have to pay for the IT group
  • The company is migrating to windows 7 and they do not install any access viewer on windows
  • And we don't have permission to install software by ourselves

Your only real solution to this problem is to go back to your employeer, clearly describe the road blocks that IT has placed in your way and then ask for the tools that you need.

If you want to develop in Access, then you need your employer's support to make sure that at least the Access "runtime" is installed on every "client" PC and that you have at least ACC2007/2010 installed on your PC. We'll be here to help you thru the sticky parts (start with: > Database Normalization and Table Structures. this will help not only with Access but any RDMS)

If you're going to develop in some other database, then you will need to get it installed. Once again, this is going to have to involve your employer standing behind you and telling the IT departement to do its job and get you the tools you need to get this project off the ground!

Until, and unless, you get a commitment by your employeer to provide the tools you need, I doubt that you will have any hope in solving this issue.

As for the JAVA Script thing... you might look at this library from sourceforge - Use this at your own risk, I've not researched nor used any of the following:
JavaScript Interface Library for Microsoft Access (2009)
ACCESSdb is a JavaScript library used to dynamically connect to and query locally available Microsoft Access database files within Internet Explorer. All you need is an .mdb file; Access does not even need to be installed! All of the SQL queries available in Access can be executed on the fly, including SELECTs, INSERTs, UPDATEs, and JOINs. Results are output in several customizable formats including JSON, XML, and HTML.

In anycase: This is an Access/VBA forum; however, within your post you make it very clear that Access is not going to be available for your, or anyone elses, use within your company. Therefore, the thread has no further answer within within this forum's context; thus, I'll move it to the JAVA forum.
