How to identify Selected Word index in Javascript?

Does Javascript have a function that can identify where the selected word exist?
if i have HTML element that contains a number of words:

<p>the harvest is **the** process of gathering mature crops from the fields</p>

ideally i want to know the index of selected word, if i select **the** word in the double star(**).
