Why is onclick not firing in FireFox?

I am rendering the following HTML elements in a firefox browser, but when I click on the image in the anchor tag no alert box appears. Any thoughts on why?

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. <a onclick=”javascript:alert('1');return false;” href="#"><img src="/notes.ico.png" style="border:none;"/></a>
Browser platform:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2.9) Gecko/20100830 Red Hat/3.6-2.el5 Firefox/3.6.9
