responsetext has html tags removed

When i set the contents of mydiv with a html formatted string

document.getElementById("mydiv").innerHTML=xmlHttp 4.responseText;

it displays the data without the html formatting tags.

my responsetext contains "<tr><td>xxx</td><tr><tr><td>zzzz</td></tr>"

the output looks like this "xxxzzzz"

What is necessary to get this data displayed correctly?
thanks
