In another post I showed an HTML file starting "<! filename..." and
ending "<! end of filename>".

One respondent suggested I should add hyphens: "<!-- ..."

Is this a good idea?

That would be a mark-up question not a javascript question, so better
asked on a mark-up group.

Yes, that's how you do comments in HTML. <!-- stuff -->
