ajax and javascript eval()

Regards to the group

I have 2 external scripts that I use in a html file...
first one sends an ajax request for the file first.php, and the second
one runs a sortable function on it... how can I make the request and
the run the second script? Do I use eval or...?please... at least
pseudo code because I'm new to ajax.
thx
