style.paddingBottom read only?

I'd like to read the padding of an element. Is this possible?

Is there a good reference that has the readable DOM properties. It's
not hard to figure out the settable ones!

Do a search for getComputedStyle (FireFox, Safari, Opera) and
currentStyle() (Internet Explorer). You'll want to write a function
that handles browser specific needs. Or, if it suits you, check out a
library jQuery or YUI. They usually include utility functions to
easily handle this and much more.

They include utility functions written by people who don't know what
they are doing. That's not good for anybody.
