auto refresh part of a page

how do i refresh part of a web page without causing a blink effect

this is the typical strength of ajax :) ... that uses a XMLHttpRequest to make a call to the server in the background and when the response is ready to use ... you simply could update the part of the page. for a quick-start have a look here and/or read through the ajax-links in the offsite-links-thread at top of our javascript forum ...
