What do you mean by using JavaScript instead of Ajax? The J in Ajax is JavaScript.

Here are some disadvantages.

The main problems are the back button, bookmarking, latency and search engine optimization.

It's up to you to weigh the benefits and problems and decide if it's worth it. Don't forget the advantages!
