div tag not supporting js files

I used ajax and getting the response text while printing it directly ..
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. document.write(pr.responseText);
but when I'm using
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. document.getElementById("gtab").innerHTML=pr.responseText
I'm not getting the correct output.
what might be the reason

What is returned as the response in pr.responseText?
