find out true Javascript history length

I am trying to create a kind of back button for one my pop up pages.
I am just using history.go(-1) for the button.

I would like to only make the button visible when the user can go back.
the trouble is the hostory.length increases even if the user does go back (when actually there is one less page the user can go back to).

Anyone know a way I can get the true amount of pages a user can go back to?
Or another way hide a button when a user can't go back?

Thanks very much

Isn't that what the browser back button is for?

Yes it is. And if you don't want to show the toolbar in the window?

Well, in that case, perhaps you could create your own history trail.

When you begin, there will be no back button. As the user advances, you can add the previous page to the history cookie. You can use this cookie on any of the pages to know where the user is in the history array.
