How to reference opener.opener, when the middle opener is closed?

I need to be able to reference the main window, from a child of a child window but the middle child is closed. Here is the scenario...

Main window = a
new window = b (child window of a)
new window = c (child window of b)

After I submit a form in child window c, I want to submit and close child window b (which I already have working properly) and then reload parent window a, and finish by closing child window c.

So far I can get all of it working except, when I submit/close child window b, child window c can't refresh parent window a. (opener.opener no longer exists since the middle opener is gone)

So how can I reference the very first main window from 2 child windows deep?

top is a global alias for the top (main) window

when you refresh (reload) it you lose connection to all the current child windows, so close window c before reloading top.
