var i = 0: why is i such a common variable name?

i've been looking at javascript for a long time and just recently decided to buckle down and actually start learning it. I always see that whole var i .... why is i such a common variable name?

var i can be var x if u want. whatever names make sence for you will do. if your creating a variable for sum you would name it "sum" and not "i" cuz you want to use meaning names.

i comes from int- a variable type integer, useful in loops.
