doesn't run validation using .submit();

Hi,

I have form that I need to run validation on when it gets submitted. when creating the form I call the validation function on submit

<form name="form1" method="post" action="createFrame" onSubmit="return validateSubmit();" >

this runs fine if I have a submit button.

However I have a button that the user clicks to clear the fields. Afer the user clears the fields then the button text changes to "Insert" when the user clicks the button again, I call a very simple function that runs this line

document.form1.submit();

The form is submitted, but the validation doesn't run? What am I missing?

What is the code that executes to reset the form? Perhaps it's doing something sneaky to the form or the submit button....
