hi ...

let me give you an example ... we add an event-listener to the document to retrieve the id of the currently focused element ... that is the target of the focus-event. the example is for MOZ/Firefox etc. not for IE ... have a look at the articels-section to get an idea of making it cross-browser-compatible:
<script>
function focus_event(e) {
var dsp_container = document.getElementById('focused_ele');

if (typeof e.target.id != 'undefined') {
dsp_container.innerHTML = e.target.id;
}
}

function init_focus_events() {
document.addEventListener('focus', focus_event, true);
}
</script>

<body onload="init_focus_events()";>
<input type="text" id="test2"/>
<input type="text" id="test4"/>
<input type="text" id="test3"/>
<div id="focused_ele"></div>
</body>
kind regards
