possible to getSelection from AJAX sites?

Is it possible to get highlighted text on an AJAX style website using
javascript? I'm writing a bookmarklet for Firefox and it works for
regular pages and framed-pages but not others. In these cases,
getSelection returns a blank selection even if text is highlighted.
Ideas how to proceed? A google search has turned up nothing or me so
far.

Which others?
