select option to trigger php script

I have a php script to query a postgresql database and return a value, this works fine on its own. I also have a select form with html. On selection of an option within this form, I want to execute the php script using the option selected as the basis of the database query. i.e.
Select X from table Y where Z = option selected.
I am then populating a text field with X. I am trying to use the onclick() function within the select form to execute the php script. Not having any success, because onclick() is expecteing an object. Also, how can I assign the value of the php variable $X to a text field? All I see is the php code and not the value of the variable.

Any help on either or both issues greatly appreciated.#
