I would not think usenet has official and unofficial NGs,
but I like the clj haughtiness the above statement represents.

Perhaps in this answer a point could be made, that clientside javascript is
assumed, but that javascript in stand alone and serverside configurations
are welcome and on topic, but should be specified as such.

Serverside javascript is only handled in here if YOU are in.

There are official and un-official javascript newsgroups though.
According to the charter, c.l.j is the official javascript newsgroup.
The "official" refers to the group, not whether it is an official Usenet
group or not.

I only remember that because I have asked about it before.

So the haughtinessness is just selfprofessed.

I can accept that. ;-}

It's not clear whether Usenet is meant to refer to the Big-8 groups or
more widely.

The answer should accommodate all groups that are well-propagated by the
News mechanism and legitimate by the standards of their hierarchies, but
not any that spuriously appear on Google.

It should mention, but need not list, those in "national" hierarchies
(DE FJ FR IT JAPAN NO PL). Outside the USA, how widely are those
actually available from genuine News servers (I expect Google has them
all)?

It should explicitly include m.p.s.jscript: "The news:microsoft.*
hierarchy has groups for Jscript, including m.p.s.j".

It should mention the existence, outside the Big 8, of more general web
authoring groups which include javascript.
