custom popup window

I am wondering how to create a "popup" window that i have seen on a few websites. When i click a link the window opens but it isn't in a new browser it is still contained in the browser, but the rest of the page is grayed out and cannot be used until the "popup" window is closed. I am wondering if anyone knows how to code that, what language you can use or maybe a good tutorial. Thanks.

It depends what type of popup you want. Do you want to inform the user about something? Use alert:

alert("Type your message here");

If you want to get some information from the user, use a prompt dialog box and if you want to get a confirmation, use a confirm dialog box.

This requires javascript which should be included within <script> tags on your HTML page.
