I am trying to help a former student. He needs to resolve this problem
in javascript and I do not teach javacript and I am lost.. Can any one
help?!?!?!?

Write JavaScript to solve the following problem: Calculate the
commission a salesperson would receive on a gross sales amount. The
commission is 9% and the base salary is 200.00

And, mathematically, that looks like ?

What about base salary regarding with a commission on a sale ?
(9% is a very good commission, which is the employer ?)
<form onsubmit="return false">
<h3>commission</h3>
<p>Enter sale amount here :
<input onchange="this.value=this.value*9/100">
and click outside the field.</p>
</form>

"HELP!!" is not a useful subject line. If you give some clue as
to what you're asking about, more people will read your question.

If you're a teacher, you've been to college and know how to
calculate a 9% commission on $200.00. In another post, you
say that you teach Computer Science, so you know the syntax
for the arithmetic expression in two or three different
languages and so should know what it is in Javascript. What
is it that you really need to know?

I really need to know what i asked... I teach computer applications in
a small catholic school. I am the teacher by default. most of
everything I l have earned I learned from asking questions and making
mistakes.. I understand how to calculate percentage just not how to do
it in javascript. My student is in college and has a class in
javascript and this is a problem he was having. I told him i would ask
around.. and came here because it often helps me. Doris. Sorry to
disappoint but no hidden agenda here.

<script type="text/javascript">
function getCommission( amount, commissionPercentage){
var r=(commissionPercentage.replace(/$/g,""))*
(amount.replace(/[^\d.]/g,""));
r/=100;
return isNaN(r)?
"Numbers Only":r.toFixed(2)?r.toFixed(2):Math.round(r*100)/100;
}
alert(getCommission("$1,000.85", "5.5%"))
</script>

Note the massage of the inputs. Not elegant, but will do the job

Your former student probably has classmates with whom he could discuss
this question. There are also likely professor office hours he could
attend. You could suggest that _he_ asks on comp.lang.javascript but
not just for an answer to his homework assignment but about the concept
causing him trouble. There are also books on JavaScript of various
quality and google. These are all more worthwhile lessons than an
answer to his particular JavaScript question. If you were his teacher
it is nice you are trying to help and it is ok if you say that you
don't know the answer. He needs to fledge and learn about finding new
resources.
