Position a layer relative to a table cell and size it

1
I am pretty new to javascript and working with layers and have searched but found no answer to the following questions: How do I Position a layer relative to a cell in a table? Also how can I set the size of the layer based on the content?

I am putting together a site in ASP.Net and my client wants to have a button like they have on the amazon home page, where on mouseover a list of categories is shown. I have found code to show and hide the layer but nothing to show me how to position the layer or size it.

Thanks for the help!

Use the top and left properties to position the div/layer which can be positioned relatively or absolutely using "relative" and "absolute" respectively for the position property. To size the div, use the width and height properties. These can be set using CSS or using JavaScript via the Style object.
