width of table in Richard Cornford's table scroll script

I'm using Richard Cornford's table scroll script (http://www.litotes.demon.co.uk/examp...leScroll.html), and I've discovered that I can "freeze" as many cells as I want by making them "th" tags instead of "td" tags.

I want to have the left 3/4 of the table frozen while scrolling the last 1/4 on the right...and that's where I ran into a problem. It seems like the scrollable area can't be smaller than the frozen area.

I've been trying to figure out why this would be...and how to change it, but this script is over my head. Can anybody point me in the right direction?
