Is there method to determine if the page was navigated to by using the
browser BACK button?

In the sense of "already been there"?

Who wants to know, the clientside code in the page, or the server?

In general, use serverside [session] code and prevent cashing,
or use counting cookies.

As opposed to me pressing the backspace key? No, you have no way of
knowing that.
