js & ODBC

hello,
I want to connect to firebird database from JavaScript; I've heard that it
is possible.
Did somebody do it?

You can't directly attach to a database from javascript because
javascript lacks any real I/O provisions (no sockets.)

But you can use an AJAX approach to this. What I do at work is use the
XMLHttpRequest to request a PHP/ASP/JSP/CGI/whatever file on the server
side which does some database calls and returns an XML document
representing the database result which I can use in Javascript.

That's one approach. I guess another would be using Javascript to
script a Java applet if you want to do it all on the client side.
