Novice: inserting text from external source

I have a piece of text which is generated by an external CGI-alike method.
That is, if I go to "http://myserver/cgi-bin/translate.pl?word=aardvark" I
get back the translation of the given word. I would like to use Javascript
to insert that translation into the document, something along the lines of:

document.write( "http://myserver/cgi-bin/translate.pl?word=aardvark" )

but where the string is evaluated as a URI and the result is written into
the document.

Can I do that using Javascript?
