Change settings for status bar

XP pro, IE, automatically shows 'current time'. If I write javascript that
gives a status bar message, the message appears quickly, then XP status bar
goes back to showing the current time. This is not helpful. How do I get rid
of IE status bar always showing time and just show whatever I tell it to
show?

By independent surveys, 99% of users do not pay any attention to the status
bar after the page is finished loading, so treaking/tweaking status bar is
an overall waste of time.
Maybe you want to try tooltips instead? Like this one:
