Using code someone else wrote: attribution or express permission?

Hey guys,

I found some code I really like. ;)
It has who wrote it there, but no contact info.
If I attribute the author, is that enough, or should I also try to contact
him for permission to use the code?

What do you all think?

Right the last time. Don't use it without contacting the author and
getting his permission.

BTW - Wot's the URL of the source of the script?
Somebody here may know how to contact the author,
or may know, or *be*, the author.

Obviously, he's a busy guy and I'm more than a little intimidated by the idea
of e-mailing him, even if I could get the address.

Everything is copyrighted these days. This is the European convention.

You could re-engineer it since the concepts are not copyrighted.

The algorithms could be patented.

I don't want it THAT bad. *grins*

It was just for something stupid here at work.
They can keep using IE or type it their darn selves. It won't kill 'em. *heh*

With the cost of writing code these day, you could offer to pay him
for the function.

Looked like he had freeware on his site. Maybe this routine was
included.

Hey, sorry about talking so long to respond to this. I'm very behind
on email.

*taps microphone, coughs*

So... just in case someone's still following this thread... I just
confirmed with our development and executive team what specifically is
the deal with re-use of our client-side scripting. As of *right now*,
it's still closed source as we're trying to figure out the best way to
open source some of our Javascript in some useful manner that takes
into account usage liabilities and standards education and advocacy
and such.

Meaning: any Javascript I write for Blogger or Gmail or some other
Google product *may* become open-source in the future once we've
chosen some best practice or whatnot, but it's not for me to hand out
just yet.

Robert suggested that these algorithms might be patented. Hmm. Good
thought. For the textbar.js file...I dunno. I haven't seen anything
(I'd be surprised), but with such a flexible dev environment as the
client-side DOM, well... as Robert mentioned, there's any number of
ways to carve and tear the tender skin from that particular cat.

Oh. Eww. I grossed myself out.
