text on movie - old question

Is there any way to put text on an avi or movie in a web browser. are
there any browser plugins, movie players etc that can facilitate this.
i found in flash you can have EMBED mode="transparent" which allows
layers to go on top of a flash. but does anyone know of any way to
have a movie playing and place (scroll) text on top of or across it.

please please someone have a solution.

A "movie" is usually rendered by some plugin, if you know which plugin
is used to play the "movie" then you need to check the documentation of
that particular plugin to find out whether it has some setting like the
wmode setting the Flash plugin supports. There is certainly no general
solution working with every plugin in every browser on every platform.
There might of course be solutions independent of HTML and scripting,
for instance SMIL is certainly a format to play a video and some text at
the same time but I can't tell you whether the text can overlay the video.
Thus you need to find out which movie format you have, which plugin is
going to render it and then check its documentation on how to overlay
text with the movie.

thanks

i realised a while ago that it wouldnt be possible in html and
scripting. basically i am using mozilla, and its not cross browser
application, so that takes a bit of my headache away. at the minute
the only solution i can find is mplayer with the mozilla plug in and
then use rve plugin. (the people want a 'free' system). though if yu
know another solutions i would be interested to hear. i have yet to
implement the code, still looking at the best solution to display
scrolling text over avi. though i looked at the SMIL stuff, but all
the players cost big bucks.

thanks again
