Catch a click on a page?

I run a free website, and want to keep a count of users who click my
sponsors adverts on my page.

Is it possible to pickup if someone clicks a banner advert on my page?

It might be a good idea to talk to the sponsor first, but you can change
<a href="http//:mysponsor">Banner</a>
into
<a href="mylog.cgi?click=mysponsor">Banner</a>
if you control the HTML and if it is indeed just HTML. If it inserted by the
server and if it is a javascript, there may be ways of setting an event
handler on the element(s) thus included. (So many ifs, could you not show
some code?)
Then when and yes if a click occurs, you need to bring this information to
your log script without interfering with the natural consequences of the
click, perhaps by downloading a new image or opening another page.
Any ideas on how you plan to store your data? Free hosts are not well known
for their support for serverside script. I don't think you can really store
your data anywhere without some php, asp, jsp.
