Wonthaggi Civic Theatre 'WCT' Case Study
The town of Wonthaggi has a theatre which is owned and
operated by the local council, it is called the
Wonthaggi Civic Theatre (WCT) and a wide variety of
shows are presented there, for example plays, music
and talks. The management has decided to build a
computer system for WCT to handle ticket sales, keep
track of the work done by staff and record all shows
presented in the WCT. Details
D1. The system is to record each performance of each
show and manage the sale of tickets.
D2. For each show the principal participants (actors,
singers, etc. ) are to be recorded (for publicity
purposes and for historical interest).
D3. The Theatre seats are individually identified
using a letter (for each row) and a number (for the
each seat within a row). The seats are divided into
groups for ticket pricing.
D4. Salespersons are employed to handle ticket sales
including bookings, payments and issuing of tickets.
D5. Customers can book seats before the performance,
either by phone or at the Ticket Office (which is
located inside the theatre).
D6. At the time of booking, Customers must indicate
which seating group (and hence price) they want. The
Salesperson will choose the actual seats (at the time
of booking) taking into account the customer's
preferences for specific seats, if practicable.
D7. Customers must pay for their seats at the time of
booking. Payments can be made in cash or by credit
card.
D8. Specific credit cards can be banned from future
use by the council's accounting department.
D9. Customers who buy their tickets at the theatre's
Ticket Office are given their tickets at once.
Customers who book by phone have to collect their
tickets from the Ticket Office (usually they do this
just before the show).
D10. Attendants are employed to guide customers to
their seats, check their tickets, etc.
D11. For each performance an appropriate number of
Salespersons, Attendants and Cleaners have shifts
organised by the theatre manager.
D12. Shifts for salespersons are organised so that
during normal business hours a salesperson will always
be on duty.
D13. The local council intends to publicise and
promote the town by publishing information and
statistics about the performers and performances
featured at the theatre.

T1. The letter and the number of each seat is entered.
(Ie, A1 to A29, B1 to B29, C1 to C29, etc., etc., S1
to S29, T1 to T29).
T2.1 A group of seats is defined (for the top price
seats), it consists of seats A14, A15, A16 and B14,
B15, B16. This is given the price code 'TP'
and description 'Top Price'.
T2.2 Another group of seats is defined (A10 to A13,
A17 to A20, B10 to B13, B17 to B20, C10 to C20, D10,
to D20) for price code 'HP' and description 'High
Price'.
T2.3 A group of seats with code 'B' is defined (it
consists of all the seats near the back) and given
description 'Back 5 rows' (i.e. rows P,Q,R,S,T).
T2.4 The remaining seats constitute a group with code
'R' and description 'Regular'.
T3.1 Charley Cross (of 33 South Street, Wonthaggi)
works at the WCT as a Cleaner.
T3.2 Alice Adams (of 11 North Street, Wonthaggi) works
as an Attendant.
T3.3 Bev Brown (of 22 East Street, Wonthaggi) works a
Cleaner and as an Attendant.
T3.4 Stan Sykes (of 44 West Street, Wonthaggi) works
as a Salesperson.
T3.5 Synthia Smith (of 45 West Street, Wonthaggi)
works as a Salesperson.
T4.1 A show described as 'Music of Tchaikovsky played
by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra' is planned with
performances on Saturday, 22 May 2004, at 3pm and the
following day, Sunday at 8pm. The show is given
the code 'SSO-4M' and a brief title of 'Tchaikovsky
Concert'. This show comes from the 'Sydney Eggheads'
company (contact phone number 02 8811 9911).
T4.2 For show 'Tchaikovsky Concert', a celebrity
performer will be Roger Woodward on the piano.
T5.1 Staff shifts are organised for the show SSO-4M as
follows. On the Saturday, Charley will work from noon
to 2pm (and from 6pm to 8pm). On the Saturday, Bev
will do cleaning from noon to 2pm and from
5pm to 8pm and do Attendant work from 2pm to 5pm.
On the Saturday, Stan and Synthia will be on duty from
2pm to 5pm. On the Sunday, . etc., etc.
T5.2 Shifts during business hours include .
On the Friday, 14/5/2004, Stan and Synthia will be on
duty from 1pm
to 5pm.
T6.1 For show SSO-4M, at the Sunday performance, seats
in group TP will
sell at $99 for an adult.
T6.2 For show SSO-4M, at the Saturday performance,
seats in group TP will
sell at $88 for an adult.
T6.3 For show SSO-4M, at the Saturday performance,
seats in group HP
will sell at $77 for an adult.
T6.4 For show SSO-4M, at the Saturday performance,
seats in group B will
sell at $22 for an adult.
T6.5 For show SSO-4M, at the Saturday performance,
seats in group R will
sell at $33 for an adult.
T6.6 The ticket price for children and for concession
card holders is half of
the adult ticket price.
T7.1 At 2:30pm on Friday, 14 May 2004, a customer at
the ticket office
purchases two adult tickets for the Saturday
performance of the
Tchaikovsky Concert. She chooses 'Regular' seats J13,
J14. She is
served by Stan and pays in cash.
T7.2 At 2:40pm on Friday, 14 May 2004, a customer at
the ticket office
purchases three tickets for the Saturday performance
of the
Tchaikovsky Concert, one Adult ticket, one Child
ticket and one
Concession ticket. Being familiar with the layout of
the theatre, she asks
for 'Regular' seats K10, K11 and K12 (which are
available). She is
served by Synthia and pays with a 'Mistress' credit
card (details: Card
Owner Judith Jones, Number 333-111-777, Expiry Date
5/5/2005).
T7.3 At 2:41pm on Friday, 14 May 2004, a customer
makes a phone booking
for three adult tickets, in Group HP, for the Saturday
performance of the
Tchaikovsky Concert. He is served by Stan and asks for
tickets in the
'High Price' group and pays with a 'Visor' credit card
(details: Owner George Grant, Number 4444-22-333,
Expiry Date 7/7/2007), seats D18,
D19 and D20 are assigned to him.
T8.1 At 2:45 pm on 22/5/2004 (15 minutes before the
show is due to start), a
customer at the Ticket Office asks for his reserved
tickets, quoting the
name of George Grant. He is served by Synthia, who
issues the
tickets.
T9.1 Another show is arranged, it is a play, described
as 'The Australian
Family - an enquiry into moral values' there will be
one performance
only, on Thursday, 27 May 2004, at 7:30pm. The show is
given the code
'P-AF' and a brief title of 'Australian Family'.
T9.2 For the show 'Australian Family' .
