I am learning from:

1) JavaScript Weekend Crash Course by Steven Disbrow ISBN 0-7645-4804-2
2) JavaScript for the world wide web by Tom Negrino and Dori Smith ISBN
0-201073517-2
3) JavaScript for Dummies ISBN 0-7645-0112-7

They have gotten me started quite well. Check for them on www.half.com I'm
sure you'll find some really good buys.
