Marquee and jScript

Hi,

Can i dynamically change the direction (through javaScript) of a marquee ???

E.g.:
===
<marquee id = 'newsScroll' name = 'newsScroll' direction = 'down'
scrollamount = '1' scrolldelay = '1' onmouseover='this.stop()'
onmouseout='this.start()'>
some texts here...
some texts here...
some texts here...
</marquee>

<br><br><br>

<a href="javascript: scrollUp();"><img src="scroll-up.gif"></a><br>
<a href="javascript: scrollStop();"><"><img src="scroll-stop.gif"></a><br>
<a href="javascript: scrollDown();"><"><img src="scroll-down.gif"></a>

<script language="JavaScript" type="text/JavaScript">
function scrollUp()
{
document.getElementById(newsScroll).direction = 'up';
}

function scrollStop()
{
document.getElementById(newsScroll).stop();
}

function scrollDown()
{
document.getElementById(newsScroll).direction = 'down';
}
</script>

This does not work.
Any solutions / tutorials please..

Thanks,
